The Italians named the variety Arneis because it means little rascal, a difficult grape to manage in the vineyard and rarely cultivated in great amounts. Mostly it is used with Nebbiolo in the same way as Viognier is added to Shiraz, to soften the palate, to enhance and to pefume. Within Australia, usually grown to the cooler vineyards of Victoria, it has finally found it's niche as a pure varietal wine. Most of the fruit to this wine is picked from the cooler, higher parcels, which express more tropical flavours than grapes from the valley floor. The palate is crisp and steely, and drinking beautifully now.

The quiet achievers in Yarra Valley Chardonnay, De Bortoli have been husbanding the choicest sites for decades, all the while training their vines to yield harvests of increasingly higher quality fruit. Windy Peak can now make available to fine wine enthusisats with an eye for value, a quality of Chardonnay without peer. For all adherents of fine and approachable new world Chardonnay, Windy Peak is richly structured, a regimen of extravagant vinification techniques contribute exceptional balance to the finished wine.

All White Box wines are made from grapes grown to estate vineyards within Heathcote and Yarra Valley. The fruit is always selected from the most appropriate site depending on the nature and variety of wine. The estate's Chardonnay is crafted from batches of the best Yarra Valley fruit. The cooler climate of the Yarra Valley lends itself to the production of Chardonnay, producing a more intensely flavoured and expressive wine. Structure and finesse, well balanced acid brings the natural fruit sweetness to a long, clean finish of exceptional length, taught and crisp.

Established 1963, well ahead of the resurgence in Victorian viticulture, Wantirna Estate hosts a block of priceless Chardonnay vines, now into their fifth decade of maturity, planted to an east facing slope which captures a judicious measure of morning and afternoon sunlight. Grapes are all hand picked and gently pressed into a selection of seasoned and new French oak barriques, followed by the luxury of eleven months lees stirring battonage. Oval Vineyard was grafted to Pinot Blanc in 2011, it yields a steely, mineral driven style of Pinot Blanc with wonderful white flower, beeswax and green apple characters. Favorita is a very close relative of Vermentino, grown to a lower section of the Art Martin Vineyard at Dixons Creek, a closely planted, north facing fertile block which yields finely structured, delicately textural wines. Grapes are all hand picked and gently pressed directly to large oak casks for a natural yeast ferment, gently stirred for creaminess and texture, followed by six months maturation. Gently aromatic with racy notes of citrus over a crisp mineral palate, Favorita is the wine of choice to match alongside cheese inspired recipes, welsh rarebit and fondue.

A collation of Chardonnay parcels harvested off choice Yarra Valley sites, including the auspicious estate properties at Tarrawarra and Dixons Creek. De Bortoli operate the most well established Chardonnay vineyards in the region, her viticultural team have had decades of practice at training their vines to yield the finest harvests. Long on the palate with all the vital Yarra Valley stonefruit flavours, Vinoque is enhanced by old world vinification techniques to become nutty and complex, immensely satisfying and long on the palate.

The ancient Romans didn't invent wine but they certainly made it their own, even assigning a deity to the pleasurable pastime of imbibing the inebriant fruit. Bacchus was the pagan god in charge, he would call to his congregants Vinoque, vinoque! when his cup ran dry. State of the art viticulture and good old fashioned hand picking is followed by a course of traditional vinifications, to achieve a generously proportioned wine that's finely structured and beautifully balanced. Rob Dolan is a charismatic winemaker and towering sportsman to boot. At 6 foot 6, Rob acquired the nickname Sticks during his dual premiership for Port Adelaide. He ultimately pursued his passion for making great wine, working alongside some of the most accomplished names in the industry. Dolan settled on a tally of superb sites in the Yarra Valley from which to draw fruit for his self titled label. Citrus and stonefruits, jasmine notes and flor, guava and grapefruits, the greenness of snap pea, lemongrass and thyme.

One of the Yarra Valley's original vineyards dating back to 1862, St Huberts currently operates four blocks of distinguished Chardonnay vines. Planted on a gentle slope of well drained grey loamy soils, the fruit from these parcels provides the backbone to one of Victoria's most stately Chardonnay wines. The princely berries translate into a beautifully aromatic bouquet and rich palate, slightly citrus, set against a background of grapefruit, apple and melon flavours all bound together by suggestions of cool climate mineral and French vanilla oak.

Established to deep red basalt soils by family Shelmerdine in 1985, Lusatia Park at Woori Yallock in the upper reaches of Yarra Valley, is a very demanding site. Vines are all closely planted and require a lot of work but the quality of harvest is spectacular, consistently yielding vintages of urbane, mineral infused Chardonnay. Fruit is all hand picked and whole bunch pressed, treated to full malolactic and battonage. Its voluble palate of oatmeal, almonds and brioche, is tightly structured, taintless and refined, defined by its crystal elegance and briny, lingering finish.

Redbox of Nillumbik are amongst the closest Yarra Valley wineries to Melbourne. The growers and winemaking team here know their vintages intimately and retain access to some of the finest Sauvignon Blanc found anywhere in Victoria. Undulating slopes and a myriad of aspects create a pallette of terroirs and mesoclimes from which to make personable wines. It is ultimately a team effort between growers and winemaker to construct the essential Yarra Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The quality of fruit grown in the vineyard is superb, the finished wine is even better.

The Shire of Nillumbik is steeped in history, dotted with villages and towns, each with its own special magic. An exclusively estate grown wine, the eight acre Redbox Vineyard was originally planted to Chardonnay in the 1980s, it's mature vines yield an elegant, creamy style. Delightful peach and stone fruit aromas are supplemented by tropical fruit characters, making Redbox the ideal accompaniment to richer white meat and cheese pasta recipes.

The Oakridge vines emerge each morning from misty rolling mists which drift across the chilly terroirs of Coldstream. The finest blocks were established with a view to achieving low yielding harvests of the most superior quality fruit, destined in the finest vintages to be bottled as pure, single vineyard wines. An outstanding parcel of Chardonnay, picked off the superlative Drive Block at Funder & Diamond Vineyard, has been treated to the full extravagance of French Grand Cru techniques, big boned, opulent and textural, in uncannily Burgundian styling.

An artisanal emulation of the great white Bordeaux, grown along the left bank of Garonne around the illustrious appellation of Graves. Mostly Sauvignon Blanc, a fifth of Semillon et soupcon de Muscadelle, each row of vine picked just as the intensity in the grapes peaks. Luxuriously barrel fermented in seasoned French oak, treated to pressage sauvage for texture, lees stirring battonage and a year's maturation, fashioned for complexity in a tittilatingly dry style, for those who prefer their whites, savoury, salacious and structurally refined.

Completely oak barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc, in the style of the fashionable Californians who coined the term Fumé Blanc while in search of the ultimate, titillatingly, dry white elixir. A firm press of grapes for textural sauvage and phenolic grip, is followed by vinification at higher temperatures on gross solids for complexity and charm. Deeply oyster shelled bouquet, brimming with smoky florals, calico and bouquet garni, its juicily drying palate, resolving on a finish of crystaline jube, wet pebbles and savouriness of grilled smoky nuts.

The opulence of oak barrel vinifications, a firm press of the ferments, lees stirring and extended term of age, Marli Russell is as voluptuous as you'll find Marsanne Roussanne. A bouquet that bursts from the glass, beautiful lychee perfumes, white peaches, pears and fresh lime, a more ish honeydew sweetness, exceptional drive by virtue of such juicy acidity and judicious phenolic texture. Offering layers of complexity and marvelous length, the intensity builds along the entire palate, long after Ms Marli has played and departed.

Yering Station can boast of a long and mutually propitious association with Chardonnay, its rootstock has been called upon to establish many Victorian vineyards. An entry level into the noble house of Yering Station, nothing is ever done in half measures here, the vines are all fully mature and many of the grapes for Little Yering are picked by hand, the finished wine is aged exclusively in French oak. Fashioned to the enduring fruit forward Yarra Valley style, a well proportioned Chardonnay offering refined bouquets, intense flavours and lingering concentration.

Sauvignon Blanc sourced from Lillydale Estate's Sunnyside and Morning Light Vineyard blocks, as well as a small quantity from a favoured grower. Fruit from the three vineyards was hand picked, then handled separately to accentuate the individuality of each block. The 2006 vintage was characterised by warm, dry conditions in November and December followed by a heat wave during February, bringing the harvest date forward for Sauvignon Blanc. The vintage delivered beautifully ripe Sauvignon Blanc with excellent flavour concentration.
